During active service, officers and their families have access to a wide range of personal and professional resources such as healthcare, travel, advanced education, and financial benefits. Promotions are based on time in rank, successful performance in assignments, and appropriate education. Officers also attend career-level schools like Expeditionary Warfare School and may seek advanced degrees. After their first tour, they serve in non-MOS-related positions such as recruiting duty.

Lieutenants will usually be allowed 30 days leave in conjunction with their orders to their first unit after IOC. Upon completion of IOC all officers will receive the MOS 0302. The Marines are sharply reducing the number of M777 155-millimeter howitzers, and instituting modest cuts to tiltrotor and helicopter squadrons. Most classes will start within two weeks of TBS graduation, and in some instances just a few days. IOC class dates usually are aligned with TBS cycles therefore, downtime between TBS and IOC is limited.
